Womenfest in Key West set for Sept 8-13
KEY WEST, Florida Keys | Thousands of women are expected to flock to Key West Tuesday through Sunday, Sept. 8-13, for the 23rd annual Womenfest in the island city known for its all-welcoming diversity.
The popular festival for lesbians and their friends features activities ranging from women-only snorkeling and watersports excursions to high-energy late-night dance parties.
Activities are designed to allow singles, couples and groups of women to experience the atmosphere of openness and acceptance that has made Key West an internationally acclaimed lesbian and gay vacation destination.
Womenfest’s entertainment highlights include two “Laughing Out Loud” comedy performances by Dana Goldberg, a fast-rising star of the contemporary comedy circuit, and musical offerings by award-winning singer/songwriter/musician Jennifer Corday.
In addition, the schedule includes a luncheon honoring Kelly McGillis, star of “Top Gun” among other films, for her continued contributions to Key West and its LGBT and arts communities. McGillis also is to appear at a flag football game recalling the Kelly McGillis Classic International Women’s & Girls’ Flag Football Championship, held each winter in the island city.
Womenfest’s on-the-water offerings include women-only sunset sails and dolphin watching excursions, wine cruises, jet ski tours, kayaking, parasailing, reef snorkeling, and even an all-women “floating tea dance.”
Attendees can discover Key West’s land-based highlights during entertaining trolley tours that spotlight the history, contributions and landmarks associated with the island city’s flourishing LGBT community.
For film buffs, the schedule features the Florida premiere of “Hannah Free,” starring Sharon Gless. Best known for her roles in television’s “Queer as Folk” and “Cagney & Lacey,” Gless is to meet festival attendees during a reception with the filmmakers.
After dark during Womenfest, revelers can dance the night away at top Key West clubs and bars, enjoying events that include an outrageous all-girl body paint dance party.
