75th anniversary of Alcatraz
(California) — On August 9 Golden Gate National Recreational Area will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the opening of U.S. Penitentiary Alcatraz with programs and activities throughout the day on Alcatraz Island.
More than 75 former residents of Alcatraz, representatives from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, U.S. Coast Guard and other partner government agencies are scheduled to attend. Throughout the day, first-hand accounts will be shared by former convicts, guards and guard families that lived on the island.
The US Post Office will be on hand to cancel letters and postcards with a commemorative postmark. Details will be posted at www.nps.gov/alca. Tickets, expected to sell out early, are available at www.alcatrazcruises.com.
