SFJAZZ Spring Season 2012
San Francisco – December 6, 2011: San Francisco is gearing up to greet visitors and artists coming from all over the world to participate in the SFJAZZ Spring Season 2012.
SFJAZZ, one of the nation’s leading non-profit jazz organizations, has revealed the complete artist lineup for the four-month-long season, which begins on February 9 and continues through June 17. The Spring Season 2012 will present more than 40 concert performances, highlighting some of the most renowned artists in the arena of jazz and world music.
The Spring Season 2012 will feature numerous themes:
• Jazz Continuum:
A collection of up-and-coming stars and celebrated artists presenting a variety of modern jazz artistry, including a performance by the famed Dave Holland Overtone Quartet with Chris Potter, Jason Moran & Eric Harland.
• Art of the Song:
A group of lyrical storytellers comprised of songwriting legend “Dan Hicks’ 70th Birthday Bash: A Reunion of the Hot Licks,” featuring special guests such as Roseanne Cash and Mark Orton.
A power-packed lineup with a Caribbean flair leading off with pianist Chucho Valdés & the Afro-Cuban Messengers.
• Flamenco Sketches:
Guitar genius Paco de Lucía and the lauded pianist Chano Domínguez, along with de Lucía’s heir apparent Vicente Amigo will perform a flamenco-inspired collection.
A gifted group of keyboard musicians leading off with eminent pianist Uri Caine with John Hébert & Ben Perowsky.
• Global Village:
This series consists of performances by Irish idols The Chieftains, along with other cultural and national groups. The Israeli JazzFest, a weekend dedicated to growth and recognition of Israeli jazz musicians, will also be part of the Global Village series.
• Soulful Singers:
These hypnotic storytellers interpret the legacy of song with passion, grace and fire. This series will consist of pieces performed by R&B diva Chrisette Michele, the illustrious Lizz Wright, along with other talented artists.
SFJAZZ Family Matinees:
Both fun and educational, SFJAZZ Family Matinees provide a window into the exciting world of live jazz. Each one-hour matinee features live performance, audience participation, Q&A and exciting music. Although designed for elementary school students, Family Matinees are open to music fans of all ages.
• Matinee 1: The Trumpet – Saturday, March 10, 11:00am
• Matinee 2: The Reeds – Saturday, April 14, 11:00am
• Matinee 3: The Trombone – Saturday, May 12, 11:00am
• Matinee 4: The Voice – Saturday, June 9, 11:00am
